Solar Radiation Maps and Data for Google Earth and GIS Software

Solar Energy - main image
  • SolarGIS data can be analysed and visualised in almost all software applications. This product line is simple and efficient. It is compatible with Google Earth or other GIS software and brings a whole range of benefits with it:
  • Improves understanding of solar resource diversity in a spatial context
  • Provides supporting arguments for decisions that your business might face
  • Create your own eye-catching maps and graphics

Presently, we offer three types of products. Each has a few advantages.

Clickable maps for Google Earth

SolarGIS data is visualised on a regular point grid with a certain offset (up to 1 km). When clicking on a point, numeric values of different characteristics (GHI, DNI, air-temperature as annual or monthly averages, other geographical data, etc.) are shown in a callout box. Data can be downloaded or simply copy-pasted into other software for further processing. Various colours indicate the values of a selected characteristic. Thanks to unique KML data structure, clickable maps can cover large areas in 1 km resolution.

  • Western Cape, South Africa (format KMZ, 555 kB)
  • Jaipur, Rajasthan, India (format KMZ, 2 MB)

Image map layers

This is a high-resolution map showing solar resources or other climate parameters. It has enhanced graphics supported by terrain shading and is delivered as one georeferenced image file. Georeferencing information enables one to visualize the map not only in Google Earth, but in other GIS software in a preferred coordinate system. Thus, you can create your own cartographical product or simply use parts of the map in your presentation as images.

Note: There are certain size limitations of the map images, depending on OS and hardware capabilities. For high resolution maps covering very large areas consult option Tiled maps below.

  • Download SAMPLE DATA for a region and try it yourself:
  • GHI: Western Cape, South Africa (ZIP file, 3.8 MB)
  • GHI: Slovakia, Europe (ZIP file, 2.3 MB)
  • DNI: Jaipur, Rajasthan, India (ZIP file, 6.9 MB)
  • HINT: after unZIPing the archive open the enclosed KML file in Google Earth
    Download this data

SolarGIS Tiled maps

Detailed maps of solar resources or other climatic parameters are composed of tiles, with the aim of delivering the best possible image quality even at a closer zoom level. Tiles are large numbers of geopositioned square images, specially processed for various zoom levels and sorted in folders. Tiles are completely compatible with various web-map applications such as OpenLayers and Google Maps.

  • Download SAMPLE DATA for a region and try it yourself:
  • DNI: Western Cape, South Africa (ZIP file, 6.5 MB)
  • GHI: Slovakia, Europe (ZIP file, 16.8 MB)
  • HINT: after unZIPing the archive open the enclosed KML file in Google Earth
    Download this data

To completely understand the solar resources, we recommend combining clickable point maps (which contain numeric data) with image or tiled map (which show the variations of the selected parameter in high detail and as an advanced cartographic presentation).
