SolarGIS database coverage

The source of data is SolarGIS database. For detailed information about data aqusition, coverage and quality visit SolarGIS pages or read data specification sheet (PDF format).

Data quality is validated by an independent expert study (University of Geneva & International Energy Agency) and among other solar databases SolarGIS was evaluated as the best performing database available on the market.

Main Features

  • Data aquisition: database derived from Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) and Meteosat First Generation (MFG) satellites data (availability 99.8%) and atmospheric parameters using in-house computing infrastructure and high performance algorithms
  • Spatial resolution: cca 3 km at sub-satellite point, enhanced by terrain SRTM-3 into 3 arc-seconds (i.e about 80 metres in Central Europe)
  • Temporal resolution: 15-min (for MSG region), 30-min (for MFG region) time series or aggregated values (hourly, daily, monthly averages)
  • Regional coverage: most parts of Europe, Africa, Asia; partly South America, Australia
  • Validation: according highest quality data sources and standards agreed within Task 36 of the IEA SHC Collaboration Agreement, and EU FP6 project MESoR.

Data products available

  • Time series: 15-minute and 30-minute (according satellite data source), hourly values
  • Aggregated statistics: daily, monthly and yearly values
  • Typical Meteorological Year (TMY)

What time period is available

  • Historical data from 1994 (in PRIME region), respectively from 1999 (in IODC region) up to present time - suitable for planning, design optimization and bankable financing, data can be accessed interactively (SolarGIS iMaps or climData applications) or via automatic data transfer (e.g. web-services)
  • Nowcasting data for the most recent history (up to the present time) can be regularly delivered via ftp, web services or email in real-time for performance assessment and monitoring
  • Forecasting data for the time horizon 0 up to 72 hours - delivered online
